Brett Shiel

As a kid I struggled to read, but my mom was a teacher so we figured it out. Reality hit again when I became a teacher. I was unprepared. It was my job to provide the quality of instruction my mom gave me. Eighteen years later, I am working with educators answering these questions, alongside researchers and foundations.

Nationally, I have co-facilitated the Supporting Students Below Grade Level workgroup alongside CCSSO for three years. I joined the Instructional Materials and Professional Learning Network as a coach for two state CAOs and their teams. In Philly, I partner with the District, charters, and education orgs. I work with Bloom to facilitate development of District strategy, and am also involved with ImpactEd at Fels Institute.

Prior to Coaching & Convening, I worked at Achievement Network, leading work in Florida with the Gates Foundation and the Florida Association of District School Superintendents. We designed and facilitated standards-aligned professional learning for chiefs and leaders. Before that, I was part of the School Systems Leaders Fellowship. I also worked at the School District of Philadelphia, Insight Education Group, and Freire Charter School. I started teaching in Houston through Teach For America.
